Retirement’s Biggest Worry

Ask yourself this: What’s your biggest fear for retirement?

We hear the same answer over and over at seminars, in-lab sessions, and online. Most retirees are afraid of one big what-if

“What if I run out of money in retirement?”

The Truth

The truth is, anyone can run out of money in retirement. Even the Gates’, and Bezos’, and Musks of the world, given the right circumstances, could lose everything in their post-work environment. Nobody knows what the future holds.

Yes, you could run out of money in retirement – but that doesn’t mean you will, so long as you take the right precautions while planning.

So, how exactly can you do that?

Prepare for the Worst

The future is impossible to control, but you can control how you plan. The same logic applies to retirement, too. You can’t control everything about how your retirement will pan out, but you can control how you prepare and accommodate for it.

Taking that first step means arming yourself with solid, up-to-date information. The more informed you are, the better equipped you’ll be to craft a retirement plan tailored to your needs and dreams.

It’s natural to turn to the internet as a first step—after all, it’s overflowing with resources and advice. But with so much information out there, learning how to navigate, verify, and trust your sources quickly becomes just as important as the research itself.

Fact Check and Cross-Reference Your Research

While the internet offers a vast array of resources to help you navigate retirement planning, the sheer volume of information available can quickly become overwhelming. With countless websites, articles, and opinions to sift through, it’s not always easy to know where to begin—or which sources you can truly trust. Misinformation and misleading advice are common, and even the most diligent researchers can fall prey to inaccurate claims.

Use a Professional

When you’re feeling sick, diagnosing yourself on WebMD only goes so far. At some point, you’ll need to go see a doctor, and the longer you hold out, the worse your sickness will likely get. The same thing applies to your finances – for something as important as the health of our retirement plan, you really should talk to a professional to get the help you need.
